Gavin Newsom, Lt. Governor of California and former Mayor of San Francisco writes about the future of civic innovation and the future of citizen engagement in Citizenville. He interviewed me during the 2011 Summer of Smart Civic Hackathon project at Gray Area in San Francisco. Gavin was one of the first mayors to understand the power of open data and entrepreneurship in the civic arena. Today as Lt. Governor he leads many of California’s economic development efforts. Here is an except from the book in which he talks about “White-Hat Hacking” in San Francisco, and the work of Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (referred to as “GAFFTA” in the book).
